DRC Minister of Mines Visits Mulondo Site After Tragedy to Strengthen Safety Measures

The day after a challenging landing in Kolwezi, Minister of Mines Louis Watum Kabamba visited the Mulondo mining site in Kawama village on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. The site was the scene of a tragic accident on November 15, which claimed the lives of several artisanal miners.

Despite the air incident, which fortunately caused no injuries, Minister Watum remained committed to his mission in Lualaba, following directives from President Félix Tshisekedi and responding swiftly to the mining tragedy.

Site Inspection and Engagement with Miners

Accompanied by a large delegation including the Advisor to the Head of State at the College of Mines, the Secretary General for Mines, provincial authorities, and supervisory officials—Minister Watum conducted a thorough inspection of the affected area.

Addressing miners on site, he expressed the Government’s condolences to the victims’ families and assured them that the Presidency is closely monitoring the situation.

He highlighted the importance of regulating artisanal mining and announced new decrees establishing 64 validated artisanal mining zones nationwide. This long-awaited measure is aimed at improving safety and operational standards for mining cooperatives.

Mining Safety: A Shared Responsibility

Minister Watum emphasized that mining safety is a shared responsibility: the State must organize, supervise, and secure sites, while operators must follow safety regulations, respect site boundaries, and adhere to operational guidelines.

While the official investigation into the Mulondo tragedy continues, mining activities at the site are ongoing. The Minister called for order, discipline, and organization to prevent further accidents.

A Mission Maintained Amid Challenges

The Minister’s visit came despite the previous day’s air incident, illustrating the Government’s determination to protect artisanal miners, enhance safety conditions, and promote a responsible mining model that supports the national economy.
